Adorning two entrances of the newly constructed medical center
in Waco, are a series of linked inverted umbrellas that seemingly float,
inviting visitors and patients into the doors. The white fabric and subtle
forms suggest an environment that will bring health and happiness.
While complex and sophisticated in detailing, the umbrellas are
nonetheless quite structurally efficient. The modular system is highly
repetitive and adaptable to varying site conditions. One structure
incorporates four modules while the other is formed by a pair of
inverted cones.
The highly durable and inert properties of the PTFE coated fiberglass
membranes will deliver decades of excellent performance while
maintaining the brilliant white appearance that is so important for any
such facility owner. Stainless steel hardware and a high performance
paint system also add to the sophistication of the structures.
The inverted cones are designed to channel the water into an integrated
downspout that eventually ties into the site storm drains below grade.
Water is channeled downwards and virtually disappears into the
structure, eliminating the need for unsightly downspouts and gutters.
