The foreshore redevelopment of Abu Dhabi Corniche is a magnificent seafront location overlooking the Arabian Gulf, and is home to many of the city's top class hotels and restaurants.
Enhancing the beauty of this scenic stretch is a number of striking tension membrane structures that combine a dramatic visual effect with practical functionality to provide shade and shelter for visitors.
The architect wanted to create a symbolic statement incorporating subtle Arabic design cues in celebration of this landmark waterfront location. They called on Structurflex to help them realise this vision.
An outline design was given to Structurflex who then worked very closely with the architect on final detailing to ensure that the unconventional design could be brought to life. Structurflex managed the design process, manufactured the membrane and supplied the cables and fittings.
The resulting structures offer UV protection and shade from the sun, while still letting through soft, natural light. At night light reflection within the structure provides a dramatic focal point, further enhancing the visual appeal of this stunning location.
