This new netball complex is the main netball venue in Auckland city, servicing thousands of netballers and spectators both day and night.
Structurflex worked very closely with the architect to develop the design for the roof which is a combination of steel roof cladding interspersed with tension membranes. By harnessing the unique qualities offered by tension membranes, Structurflex was able to provide a roofing solution that met the specific requirements of a sporting arena.
The tension membranes allow a high level of natural light through, which provides excellent playing conditions during the day and eliminates the need for artificial lighting. This is a very cost-effective solution that has the added benefit of keeping the players cooler than they would be underneath bright roof lights. In the evening, the tension membrane's reflective qualities are utilised to great effect, requiring much lower levels of artificial light to illuminate the courts than would normally be needed.
What's more, the excessive noise levels that are causing a problem in other stadiums around New Zealand are not an issue here. This is due to the favourable acoustical properties of the tension membrane which absorb sound compared with metal roofs which reflect noise.
The combination of these factors has resulted in a world-class facility that provides a very comfortable and enjoyable environment for both the players and the spectators.
