The Weehawken Ferry Terminal in New Jersey is a major transport hub for passengers to and from New York. It is the result of a multi-million dollar upgrade designed to make the terminal user-friendly, comfortable and attractive to commuters.
Tension membrane structures, manufactured and installed by Structurflex, are an important feature of the Weehawken Ferry Terminal. Not only do they enhance its look, they provide a comfortable environment for passengers in-transit, embarking or disembarking from the ferries.
The design consisted of a series of vaulted, arched tension membrane structures that offers protection against the elements, without obscuring the harbour view and the impressive Manhattan skyline beyond.
Off-site pre-manufacturing meant that installation of the tension membrane structure was very quick and caused no disruption whatsoever to passengers - unlike other materials that take much longer to erect and can emit a lot of dust or noise during construction. This is an important factor for busy locations such as this.
